We offer a variety of high-quality programs to help you meet your personal, academic, and professional goals.

Students who meet all Virginia Tech undergraduate admission requirements except the minimum language test scores, may be eligible for the AdvantageVT pathway program

This program is ideal for students who want to earn credits that will count toward their bachelor’s degree while improving their academic skills.

  • Three levels, based on English proficiency:
    • Level 3 (three semesters) is for students with high intermediate proficiency.
    • Level 2 (two semesters) is for students with advanced proficiency.
    • Level 1 (one semester) is for students with high-advanced proficiency (begins Fall 2021, on-campus only).
  • Three pathways, based on your interest: Business, Engineering, and Science.
  • Three entry dates per year — in the spring, fall, and summer.
  • No SAT or exit TOEFL required.
  • Upon completing the program, students are guaranteed entry to Virginia Tech with advanced standing in their freshman year.

AdvantageVT-Master's is a pathway program for international students who want to earn master's level credits while improving their English and academic research skills. Students who meet all Virginia Tech graduate admission requirements to participating programs except the minimum language test scores may be eligible.  

This program is ideal for students who want to earn credits that will count toward their master’s degree while improving their academic skills.

  • Three levels, based on English proficiency:
    • Level 3 (three semesters) is for students with intermediate proficiency.
    • Level 2 (two semesters) is for students with high intermediate proficiency. 
    • Level 1 (one semester) is for students with advanced proficiency.
  • Three entry dates per year for most programs — in the spring, fall, and summer.
  • No verbal GRE or exit TOEFL required.
  • Upon successfully completing the program, students are guaranteed entry to their Virginia Tech graduate program.

The Intensive English program helps international students meet their personal, academic, and professional goals through intensive English language study. Our courses are designed to help you make the transition to academic life at a college or university in the United States.

Program features:

  • Full-time, intensive instruction in all language skill areas
  • Intermediate, High Intermediate, and Advanced levels
  • Online level placement
  • Concentrated preparation for university studies
  • Optional conditional undergraduate admission to Virginia Tech
  • An advanced computer-assisted learning center
  • Up to 18 months of study, depending on placement

If you are an excellent student and wish to apply to a degree program at Virginia Tech but need to improve your English skills in order to obtain the necessary TOEFL score, don’t worry — you may be eligible for conditional admission!

Our conditional admission program for international students lets you work toward meeting the requirements of attending Virginia Tech while you study at the ­Language and Culture Institute.

Acceptance into the program is based on an evaluation of your high school ­records. As a conditionally admitted student, you are accepted into your­ chosen program on the condition that you develop your academic English to the required standard through our Intensive English Program.

The Language and Culture Institute offers free foreign language conversation classes for all Virginia Tech faculty and staff. We offer classes in American Sign Language, Chinese, French, Spanish, and German.
