What does it mean to be an AdvantageVT-Master’s student?           

It means you'll be welcomed into our community and fully supported in your academic pursuits from the day you arrive on campus.

Answers to frequently asked questions by students looking to apply to the program are listed below. 

Yes. You take specialized academic courses in your graduate field that fulfill requirements towards your degree. 

Yes. You can earn 6 to 9 credits that count toward completion of your degree program. 

No. Once admitted to the program you must remain in the AdvantageVT-Master’s program until completion.        

Yes. The AdvantageVT-Master’s program provides all students with additional tutoring support to help you succeed academically. 

You can study in the pre-pathway Intensive English Program. However, study in the Intensive English Program does not guarantee admission to a master’s program.    

Yes. Upon successful completion of the program, you will have advanced standing in your degree program. 

Yes. The AdvantageVT-Master’s program staff will support you to ensure you adapt to being an active member of the student community and to living in the United States. 

Yes. Virginia Tech issues the initial I-20 for AdvantageVT-Master’s and will advance your I-20 for further university studies after you successfully complete the AdvantageVT-Master’s program. 

Yes. The AdvantageVT-Master’s program is taught entirely by expert Virginia Tech faculty, all of whom hold advanced degrees. 

Research is an integral part of graduate studies, and there are many opportunities for students to learn alongside expert faculty and professionals in the field. 

No. AdvantageVT-Master’s applications are reviewed on a "rolling basis" as they are received. Most decisions are made within 10 business days. 

Participation in AdvantageVT-Master’s does not affect eligibility for Optional Practical Training (OPT). 

Students are not eligible for departmental funding (graduate assistantships, fellowships, etc.) while enrolled in AdvantageVT-Master’s. 

No. Acceptance is based on admission to a participating graduate program only.
